Spotlight on Access: The Vermont Assistive Technology Program
At Accessible Web, we spend a lot of time thinking about digital spaces. But digital accessibility is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. True accessibility is comprehensive; it is about ensuring that individuals with disabilities have the tools, accommodations, and independence they need to fully navigate every aspect of their physical and digital environments.
Following our recent experience at the Access VT conference, we wanted to keep the momentum going by spotlighting an incredible, vital resource right in our home state: The Vermont Assistive Technology Program (VATP).
Assistive technology is all about access. The Vermont Assistive Technology Program assists Vermonters by providing information about accessible solutions that can support independence, productivity, and confidence in their home, job, and community.
Whether you are a developer looking to understand alternative hardware interactions, an employer working on reasonable accommodations, or a local citizen looking to increase your own independence, the VATP provides critical paths to exploring and acquiring accessible solutions.
Four Ways to Engage with the Vermont Assistive Technology Program (VATP)
1. Try Assistive Technology (AT) (Hands-On Demonstrations)
Before making an investment, you can experience assistive equipment firsthand. An AT Access Specialist will demonstrate devices and answer your questions, helping you make an informed decision about what tools best fit your specific workflow, lifestyle, or adaptive setup.
2. Borrow AT (30-Day Equipment Loans)
Need to test a tool in your actual daily routine or try an adaptive device for a specific employee accommodation request? Both consumers and professionals can borrow equipment for up to 30 days. You can browse their live inventory directly
3. Get AT (The AT Exchange Market)
Buying brand-new durable medical equipment or adaptive hardware can be cost-prohibitive. To make these tools more available, the VATP hosts an online exchange marketplace where community members can safely buy and sell used assistive technology and durable medical goods.
4. Spread the Word (Community Outreach)
Building an inclusive culture requires continuous education. You can invite the VATP team to set up an interactive information display or host live equipment demonstrations at your organization’s next outreach event or community day.
Bridging the Physical and Digital Worlds
Organizations often reach out to Accessible Web because they want their web content to work seamlessly with devices like screen readers, switch inputs, or the assistive foot pedals we demonstrated at Access VT. Programs like the VATP are where users find, test, and adapt those exact physical tools.
When digital builders design for web standards (like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)), and community organizations support physical device access, we create a truly seamless ecosystem of inclusion. Small steps in physical access make a massive difference, matching the digital progress we push for every day.
