Community, Culture, and Compliance: Key Takeaways from Access VT 2026
Earlier this month, the Accessible Web team packed up our gear and headed to the Waterbury State Office Complex for the Access VT conference on Tuesday, May 12th, and Wednesday, May 13th.
As a team dedicated to tearing down digital barriers, being in a space entirely focused on accessibility and disability inclusion was incredibly energizing. We had the opportunity to set up our booth, connect with passionate advocates, and showcase some of our latest tech—including a live demo of our Chrome extension utilizing an assistive technology foot pedal device. Seeing people interact with our tools firsthand is always a highlight, but the real magic of Access VT was the depth of the conversations happening across the two-day event.
Here is a look at what we learned, what we shared, and why the future of accessibility requires looking beyond just the code.
Moving Beyond Code: The 3 Big Themes of Access VT
The schedule was packed with incredible insights, spanning everything from legal realities to neurodivergence. Looking back at our notes, three major pillars stood out that every organization—whether public or private—needs to consider.
1. Inclusion is a Cultural Shift, Not a Checklist
From the opening remarks by Loretta Ross to Rene Pellerin’s hilariously insightful closing performance (“When Cultures Collide” by the DeafBlind comedian), a recurring theme was that accessibility cannot just be an afterthought.
- Sessions like What Does Equitable Hiring Actually Look Like? and Inclusive Supervision reminded us that true accessibility starts from within an organization.
- To build accessible digital products, we must first cultivate an internal culture of belonging.
2. Communication Must Be Human-Centered
Digital accessibility often gets bogged down in technical jargon, but several sessions reminded us of the power of simplicity.
- Welcome All: How to use plain language and other communication strategies and Clear Navigation and Predictable Design drove home a vital point: clarity is accessibility.
- Whether you are designing a website navigation layout or writing content, keeping it predictable and easy to understand benefits everyone—including neurodivergent users and individuals navigating trauma.
3. The Intersectional Future of Technology
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape the web, conversations like Human-Centered AI: Artificial Intelligence and Equity are critical. AI has the potential to bridge massive accessibility gaps, but only if it is built with equity at its core. When paired with practical fundamentals—like those discussed in Screen reader navigation fundamentals for accessibility evaluation—we can ensure that technology serves communities equitably rather than leaving them behind.
Small Steps Make a Big Difference
If there was one overarching takeaway from our time at Waterbury, it’s that small steps make a massive difference in accessibility. You don’t have to overhaul your entire digital infrastructure overnight to make an impact.
Just like we discussed with the recent ADA Title II deadline extensions, waiting for a final deadline or trying to achieve “perfection” all at once causes paralysis. True progress is made by taking actionable, bite-sized steps:
- Implementing plain language guidelines in your next newsletter.
- Ensuring your next virtual event follows inclusive meeting standards.
- Testing your website with assistive technologies (like the foot pedals we demoed!).
Accessibility isn’t just a legal obligation—it is a fundamental reflection of how we value the diverse members of our community, from local residents to refugees and non-immigrants requiring language access.
