What do I do when an alt text field is too small for my description?

Question

The alt text field is too small to contain all of the text in images of documents that I post. What's the solution and what are the applicable WCAG success criteria?

Answer

According to WCAG Success Criterion 1.1.1 (Non-Text Content), you must provide an equivalent text alternative for all non-text content. However, this does not have to exclusively be provided through the alt text field.

A solution would be to provide a transcript of the document text and include it on the page under a disclosure button.
