Would we still be compliant if we suggest workarounds to color contrast?

Question

Changing the color contrast is a fundamental change in our branding. Our current ratio is 3.46:1. Would we still be compliant if we suggest workarounds, like inverting screen colors in the user’s OS?

Answer

Unfortunately, no. Asking users to rely on personal settings goes against the intent of WCAG, which is to create an equal experience for everyone. For normal-sized text, the required ratio is 4.5:1. If your brand colors fall short of that, we strongly recommend making adjustments.

Logos are an exception, they don’t technically need to meet the ratio, but we still encourage stronger contrast when possible. This is also why we recommend considering accessibility early in the design process. Reviewing brand guidelines or doing a design audit before finalizing colors can prevent major accessibility issues later.
